What it is

INSIDE records available referrer and recognised campaign information with website browsing activity. This gives you context about how a visitor arrived. It describes an observed source or link and does not establish that the source caused a purchase.

Who uses it and why

  • Operators check source context before helping a visitor.
  • Supervisors use campaign context when reviewing engagement patterns.
  • Developers check that landing-page addresses and referrers reach the tracker correctly.

Where to find it

Select a visitor to see the available referrer information in their context panel. A recognised source can also appear as a logo on the floor. With the Settings, Manager, Chat or Stats Bar role, change your local Show Referrer Logos preference at Settings › Floor › Floor Settings.

How it works

The browser supplies the referring address with page tracking. INSIDE creates referrer context when it finds a recognised, non-empty campaign parameter or a referring address with a different host from the tracked page.

Recognised campaign parameters are gclid, utm_source, utm_medium, utm_term, utm_content, utm_campaign and cm_mmc. These are public landing-page parameters your developer or campaign team supplies.

For cm_mmc, INSIDE can derive source and campaign from the first two parts separated by -_- when the corresponding UTM values are absent. Captured context includes when the observation occurred and the referrer where supplied.

The compact display can show source, medium, content and search terms. It does not necessarily display every captured campaign value.

Configure it

Use the recognised parameter names in landing-page links and preserve them until tracking runs. Use their standard lower-case spelling. Your developer should also check the page URL and referrer supplied by the integration.

Your local Show Referrer Logos preference initially inherits the website's floor setting, which defaults to on. Turning logos off does not disable referrer or campaign collection. There is no general Settings editor for adding arbitrary campaign parameter names.

Limits and good to know

  • A same-host referrer alone does not create new acquisition context.
  • Separate subdomains have different hosts and can count as external referrers.
  • Referrer processing needs a recorded page view and an absolute page address.
  • Empty campaign values do not create campaign context.
  • Referrer capture and conversation sales attribution use different rules.

FAQ and troubleshooting

Why is no source shown?

The browser may not have supplied a referrer, or the tracked page may have neither an external referrer nor a recognised campaign parameter.

Why does our other subdomain appear as a referrer?

The comparison uses the host. Different subdomains can therefore count as different sources.

Why is the campaign missing from the compact label?

The label displays selected values. Ask Powerfront to inspect the captured campaign context before assuming the campaign was not recorded.

Does turning off logos stop tracking campaigns?

No. Show Referrer Logos changes the floor display only.
